My Story.

Steam vaginal health yoni steaming san diego peristeam facilitator

I had been menstruating for 14 years and had always considered my period to be pretty easy going. It was a normal flow, 4 days, 5 if I counted the slight spotting before and after. It was nothing where I felt I needed to cancel my life, I had this mindset of “ugh mother nature paying me a visit again, this is so annoying” and then all of a sudden everything changed. I started feeling this sharp intense pain on my right side everytime my period would start. It would last two to three days and it would be on and off, almost like a flip of a switch. I didn't think much of it at first, I just figured my luck had run out and my period was just starting to become difficult.

As the months went on, the pain started to get worse and worse and worse. My April period of 2020 rolled around and I was in excruciating pain – nothing was working to take the pain of the cramps away. Because of this, I decided to go to urgent care to get seen. At urgent care I had a Genitourinary exam (this looks at the organs of the reproductive and urinary system). During my exam, it was noted that there

was a small mass on my right side and some tenderness present. There was a possibility it could be an ovarian cyst but I would need a pelvic sonogram and an appointment with a gynecologist to confirm. The urgent care doctor’s primary encounter diagnosis was that I had Dysmenorrhea (painful periods) and I got sent home with pain medication and a referral.

Several months later I ended up having that pelvic sonogram and would be informed of the results at a later time. In December of 2020 I finally had my follow up appointment. I was told that everything was normal and I was highly advised to get on birth control to stop the painful periods. I refused being placed on birth control for a treatment plan and the obgyn said there was nothing to be done and to continue taking the prescribed painkillers. I ended up leaving that appointment feeling like the doctor was very dismissive of my pain and was not open to solving the issue without prescribed medication.

My period pain at this point started coming in waves. It seemed like there was a mix of good months and bad months and I never knew what the upcoming month would bring. Because of this, I started heavily relying on cycle tracking. It ultimately got to the point where I would not make plans when I was projected to have my period. I was living in misery, the period pain was controlling my life. I adapted this “we’re going to push through it” mentality — this was my new reality.

At the start of 2023, I decided that year was going to be a wellness year and one area of my life I was going to take back control of was my period. I had already heard of vaginal steaming through my studies in anthropology but had never fully dived into the practice. In June of 2023 I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try. I started doing weekly treatments. In November of that same year, I started to see results. I no longer needed pain medication, my cramps were gone. The color of my menses had completely changed. It had gone from a brown dried color to a complete pigmented bright red. I started experiencing less spotting at the end and there was a complete removal of a slow start at the beginning. It’s been amazing to see how vaginal steaming has changed my life. I can’t believe I was told to accept my period pain and cramps as normal when they’re in fact not. It’s even a little more crazy to think no one talks about steaming as an alternative in western medicine. I’m so happy I live a pain free period life and so can you.
